WITH THE MAY bank holiday upon us, there's no escaping that feeling that summer is nearly here (despite the weather sadly being nothing as clement as the Easter weekend). And so WIRED's mind inevitably turns to things that can be done outdoors. In cars, on bikes, in the water.
Here we've made a considered selection of the latest gear available for just such excursions. And we've even thrown in a hi-tech, Bluetooth-controlled, self-heating coat (to make up for the less-than-summer-like climate). And if all you wish to do this weekend is cut the grass, we've found the best autonomous lawnmower, too.
Admittedly, a motorised child-friendly float might seem counter intuitive if you actually want junior to learn to swim, it’s actually a great idea if you’re keen on everyone, regardless of swimming ability to enjoy the water. With hidden, super-safe dual-motors and a 45-minute run time (swap out batteries for extended sessions), the Swii will drag anyone over the age of six along at a faster-than-you-think 1m/s. And with a double-trigger start there’s little danger of it escaping unattended, while the companion app gives you the chance to adjust the speed and even customise the LED lights.
And for those who find all that tedious, tiring kicking involved in actual swimming far too much like hard work, this high-performance underwater scooter will pull its owner along at 1.8m/s for up to 45 minutes on a single 1.58Wh battery charge. SeaBow, the successor to the WhiteShark MIX can dive down to depths of 40m (far further than your average person will want to go) and comes with not one but two mounts for GoPro cameras, lights or weights to adjust buoyancy. And, in a departure from most diving aids, you can configure it to work single handedly, freeing up the other hand for feeding the fish or snapping photos. Both the Swii and SeaBow, Sublue promises, are "coming soon".
